Keppel's Column

The doorway on the eastern side of the base
The doorway on the eastern side of the base

The 23 foot square base and the doorway on the eastern side are surprisingly plain, the only decoration being recent vandalism. The base is 7 feet 6 inches high.

As well as severe degradation of the facing caused by over two hundred years of weathering and atmospheric pollution, the column has suffered damage from mining subsidence and vandalism. In spite of some badly done repair work carried out early in the last century which seems mainly to have consisted of filling up holes with odd bricks and slapping a few patches of cement around the base, the column is considered unsafe for public entry. It is long overdue for restoration.

Next: Detail of damage on the eastern side.
