The style of Keppel's Column corresponds broadly to that of the classical Doric column in that it narrows towards the top. This entasis was originally intended to counteract the optical illusion of straight columns appearing to narrow in the middle. Here, where the effect is emphasised, it gives the optical illusion of greater height. At its broadest part, the column contains a room with seats. | ||||
