The dire state of the viewing platform
The dire state of the viewing platform

Amazingly, the overhanging corners of the viewing platform were originally designed to be supported only by normal masonry bonding with the stresses directed inward to the column. Damage caused by mining subsidence has not only opened large cracks in the stonework but also affected the load-bearing capacity of the structure to the extent that it cannot be guaranteed even to support its own weight. The modern (and, one hopes, temporary) solution is to apply compression using the very ugly wire binding.
