The island of North Ronaldsay in the Orkneys is entirely surrounded by a drystone wall. Built in 1832 to keep the seaweed-eating sheep from straying onto farmland, the wall is 6 feet high and over 13 miles in length. The world's first recycled cardboard classrooms were constructed from boxes donated by parents at a primary school in Southend. A child's kite caught in overhead power lines stopped trains for 75 minutes at a Bradford station. The power had to be turned off while the kite was removed. Because of a legal technicality, members of the House of Lords are officially not allowed to die in the Chamber. Cologne Cathedral took 632 years to build. It was started in 1248 and officially completed on 14th August, 1880. |
