    A thief who robbed Rio de Janeiro bus passengers of £550 had the bad luck to jump off the vehicle in front of 410 police officers attending a function.

George Knights, 42, of West London, went berserk after traffic police tried to pull him up over an out-of-date tax disc, not realising that his car was full of weapons. A high speed car chase ensued with Knights firing automatic weapons at police and public, and hijacking four cars at gunpoint. He was arrested after a 3-hour armed siege at his flat.

Police officers in Exmouth, Devon, who were having difficulty helping an elderly couple who had locked themselves out of their car, sought help from two passing men. The men, who were known to the police as car thieves, opened the door in eight seconds.

Six-year-old Steven Millar, of Barnton, Cheshire, dialled 999 to have his mother and teacher arrested for not giving him a toffee after he failed a spelling test. Police took it in good heart and gave Steven a guided tour of the cells at nearby Northwich.

Colin and Linda Warburton had spent months creating their £2,000 garden in Bedminster near Bristol. They were preparing to sell the house when thieves stole the entire garden, including shrubs, flowers, ornaments, the garden pond and its stock of fish.
