    A passenger jet bound for Malta was forced to delay take-off from Gatwick for two hours when two live chickens were discovered in a passenger's bag.

In August 1998, when George Downs, 63, released a prize pigeon in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, he expected it to fly home to Sunderland. Two years later, he got a message from Julian Radkov, in Sofia, Bulgaria, to say that the bird had just arrived breathless on his porch.

When Vince Webster's pigeon was released in the French town of Nantes for the nine-hour flight back home to Youlgrave in Derbyshire, it decided that sailing was more in its line and hitched a ride on the QE2 all the way to the USA.

50 racing pigeons belonging to Norman Jones, 57, of Merseyside had to be destroyed after vandals cut off their feet. It is believed that the identity rings were taken to make jewellery.
