As two patrol officers were showing their squad car computer equipment to children in a Detroit neighbourhood, interested passer-by, R.C. Gaitlan, asked how the system worked. The officers asked him for some identification and Gaitlan obliged with his driving licence - only to be arrested moments later when the computer showed Gaitlan was wanted for armed robbery in St. Louis, Missouri. One enterprising policeman called the number of the car phone in a stolen car, offering to buy the car. The thief arranged to meet him and was promptly arrested. After paying £600 for a police-trained guard dog, an unnamed security conscious Dutchman was justifiably annoyed when thieves, who broke into his house two days later, took nothing but the dog. Officials had to put a protective fence around a tree at a Lincolnshire prison after prisoner Mohammed Tair identified the name Allah in Arabic in the branches. |
