I have 18 birds.
The two snakes have no feet, so the remaining 34 animals are either birds, with 2 feet each, or mammals, with 4 feet each. Since they are all in excellent condition, none is missing a foot - or a head! Twice 34 is 68, so the remaining 32 feet belong to 16 mammals. 34 minus 16 is 18.
(An answer based on a 'trick' question which reckons the two 24-inch snakes as having '4 feet' would be very silly since it wouldn't take into account the length of the other animals.)
