A man in Charlotte, North Caroline, insured a case of rare cigars, smoked them and claimed insurance on their loss "in a series of small fires". After a lengthy court case, the insurance company paid up - then had him arrested on 24 counts of arson. The announced death toll from a fire in a Javanese shopping centre had to be reduced quite dramatically from 78 to 10 when it was realized that 68 of the bodies were shop mannequins. Melanie Thomson was more than browned off when her knickers caught fire while she was working at a Co-op checkout. The rest of her clothing was undamaged. Marks & Spencer scientists are reported to be baffled. Queen Victoria's knickers were sold for £210 at an auction in 1979. |
