    In the pursuit of his duties, David Spear, Cardiff council safety officer, has been knocked down by a police car, run over by a fire engine, had his neck broken in an ambulance crash and had his hand crushed by a dustbin lorry.

Two men at a Taiwanese mass tug-of-war contest wrapped the rope around their arms for a better grip. When the 800-a-side tug got under way, their arms were simply ripped off.

Kerry Bingham, the worse for drink, decided to bungee-jump from the Tacoma Narrows Bridge - using a coil of lineman's cable. After a fall of 40 feet, the cable tightened and tore his foot off at the ankle. He miraculously survived his fall into the icy water and was rescued by two nearby fishermen. "All I can say," said Bingham, whose foot was never located, "is that God was watching out for me on that night."

After a few drinks too many, Krystof Azinski and a few farming friends decided find out who was the toughest. Despite it being the middle of a Polish winter, they stripped naked and hit each other with frozen swedes. Then one of Krystof's friends grabbed a chainsaw and cut off his own foot. Not to be outdone, Krystof grabbed the chainsaw, saying "Watch this!" and sawed off his own head.
