Yellow MagicSunday, Gold, SunSay nothing on Sunday; contemplate this day the Golden Sun: A Sulphurous Yellow Light - but false - that from Cold Night was Spun.
YellowThe English word, Yellow, comes from Old English geolu. The German is gelb and both words are cognate with Latin helvus - a light bay colour. The word gold denoting 'yellow metal' is derivative. Today, 'yellow metal' is a metallurgical term for a type of brass: 3 parts copper to 2 parts zinc.In China, yellow is the Imperial colour. In the West, yellow has long been considered the colour of treachery and the laws of some European countries required Jews to dress in yellow as a sign of their supposed betrayal of Christ. Christian iconography has Judas clothed in traitor's yellow. Curiously enough, Saint Peter, the 'Rock' of Christendom and first Bishop of Rome, is traditionally pictured wearing yellow robes. In this case, so the Fathers would have us believe, the yellow signifies 'faith' - not treachery - for who would say that the very first Pope betrayed Christ. One overlooked picture, as they say, is worth a thousand approved words! - And was Saint John the Divine, author of Revelation in which we are told the Number of the Beast, aware that the total value of all squares in the Table of the Sun is 666. In terms of light, yellow is a secondary colour, composed of equal parts of red and green, and the complement to blue (i.e. blue light mixed with yellow light will produce white light). Yellow's stone is topaz.
