Green"Hello World!" Friday's final Creation of land animals and Man so depended on the verdant Earth. And yet it so depends.Beneath the Blue and noble blood,Animal life is a pyramid, the strong and aggressive feeding upon the more numerous weak and docile, but the pyramid rests on a green field. Eventually, the pyramid will crumble, collapse, decay and return once more to feed the green plant life on which it once fed. It can be no accident that the symbol of Venus is identical with the ankh - the ancient Egyptian symbol of life. The metal, copper, is a muted red until exposed to air when it acquires the green coating, verdigris (Old French: verd de Grece 'green of Greece'). Green is the central colour of the spectrum, the fulcrum or point of balance. The visible spectrum, a logarithmic scale, ranges in wavelength from 384 nanometres to 768 nanometres. Peak receptivity of green in the human eye in good daylight is 540 nanometres but at twilight it drops to 512 nanometres, the logarithmic centre of the spectrum. Twilight is Greek lyk, the Apostle Luke, Wednesday, Mercury and the colour Purple or Magenta - the complement of green (i.e. magenta light mixed with green light will produce white light). Just before evening twilight, as the rays of the setting sun lengthen to the deep reds bordering on non-spectral purples, a momentary green flash is seen as the refraction of the Earth's atmosphere offers us the complementary colour to that which it cannot ever give. Green's stone is the emerald. In Arab tradition, a serpent - the symbol of purple wisdom, green's complement - setting its eyes upon an emerald will become blind. So much for the tale of temptation, Eve and Eden. | ||||
